Christmas Pupusa Count Update

So I wrote out a whole email then my internet crashed and didn't save the email in my drafts. Here's the important stuff: 44 pupusas in the past 6 weeks. 110 in all. I weigh 156lbs (with shoes and stuff) I've gained a solid 15lbs. Thanks a lot, pupusas. We had a Christmas party as a mission and played water games and what not. Got to talk with the fam, that was aight I guess. JK. I forgot the other stuff that I wrote, but all is well here. People celebrate Christmas like they celebrate the 4th of July.

Love yall

Too Much Smiling and Sleep Talking

So this week was pretty good, nothing too crazy. We did some service and painted the roof of a member's house which was cool. So they said that normal paint is too expensive, so she bought a big jug of white glue and mixed it with some water. Yeah that was our paint to paint this ladies roof. It was super drippy and we almost painted the floor better than the roof. This day also proved that I should never be trusted with painting. I am pretty terrible at it, but its aight. Apparently I have been talking a lot in my sleep, and a little in Spanish. Last night my comp said I was crying and whining a bit. So yeah thats interesting. My future wife will have some entertaining nights listening to me. Also we have exchanges of companions this week for a day, and I went with an Elder Stout from WASHINGTON! he is from moses lake and goes home like 3 days after Christmas. He was assistant to the president for 6 months and he is super sweet. We had a good day, and he said that I need to smile more. So we were talking to this lady and I was smiling real big (because he told me too) and she was flirting super hard. So yeah we got out of there. Then he told me I need to control my smile or else I will win over too many Salvadoran girls here. So there is my week in a nutshell. 1 week until Christmas kiddos!!

Searching for More to Teach

Just my luck, Seattle would win the championship the year I flee the country.

Well another week in the books. Nothing too crazy to report on, just normal stuff really. We've started exploring more in some parts of our area. Like the parts where members gasp because they find out we visit down there. Apparently its dangerous, its all good though. Its hard there because a lot of the doors are closed and a lot of people have already "accepted Jesus.... know his gospel.... set in the path of God" or something like that. So sometimes we walk around for like 3 or 4 hours with nothing happening. its kind of a bummer but we still keep working and doing what we know that we need to do. With time and hard work things will change and get better. We'll find people ready to listen, we just have to keep looking and working hard.

Love ya'll.

Still Kickin' it in Ilopango

yoooooooo! 6 months and almost Christmas time. To answer the question everyone will have: Yes, time has flown by and at the same time, it hasn't. Time went by normal wich wasn't slow or fast. Sorry if that's not too exciting, but here I am kicking around in Ilopango. Things are going alright, people here are a little more hard and not as accepting. In San Miguel, it was fairly easy to enter a house and teach people, but here they aren't as accepting and don't want to listen, and then when they accept us they say that they accepted us just because they don't want to be punished by God or something. But we're still going. Nothing too exciting to report on this week, and no pictures either. Lo siento.

Tenga una buena semana.

Nothing Special Except an Earthquake

So nothing that special has happened this week. Fairly normal. The mission president is really stressing that we talk to more people in the street and contact more people that way. So that's been interesting, because for me I don't like going out of my way and getting in peoples faces, but it has gotten a little bit easier. Sometimes I just pretend I'm a lost gringo... "Excuse me, how do you get to...? What do you call this place?" Then we just kinda go from there. It actually works sometimes, maybe just because they have pitty on a lost gringo.

We felt an earthquake which was pretty fun, never been awake and standing up like that for an earthquake.

Last night this thug stopped us before we entered a street. He asked us where we were going and we told him the people. He didn't know who they were, but luckly there were some other people that knew, so they backed us up. Then this morning that same guy stopped us and asked me if I don't understand Spanish or something, but I just dont understand drunk gangsters.... then he said we dont have anything to worry about there, he said we're safe so need to worry here.

New Trainee and a Lack of Commitments

Greetings everyone!

So we`re still kicking it here in Ilopango with my newborn son. He is Elder Egas from Quito Ecuador. 19 years old and yeah, that's him! Things have been pretty interesting this week, because we had to do a lot of work to move some other elders into the new house that they have. That was a pain in the butt, and its also a bummer because everyone here thinks that the word of God is good. (that's not the bummer part), but its that no one is willing to do anything besides sit there and listen, or try to teach us. so yeah, we can teach a ton of people, but no one wants anything more than that... yeah its difficult but gotta be positive and on my best for my new son.

Apparently, I was going to be the District Leader too, but then an Ex-Assisstant to the president moved into our district so obviously he got it. I'm actually really glad that I didn't get it, but we´ll see what happens. Also the other night I had the fantastic opportunity to talk to three drunk guys and one of them got scared and ran away because someone else told him that we were cops... the other said he´s been to Egypt and knows everything about god because he learned it all from the hieroglyphics in Egypt. Then this other one couldn't even drink because he was so drunk, so I said to him "Hey sorry brother, I have to urinate with all the powers." then we left. Also, we´ve started entering some new colonies that are... well, a little sketch.... and the members told us we have to enter in slowly, little by little so the punks in the streets can know us a little bit better... So yeah things are way good and exciting! That's it for today children.

Vista del Lago Illopango

Greetings at the end of another change, and I have some news. I'm pregnant... I was notified this past Wednesday that I am going to be giving birth in a couple days. As in I'm going to be training a newb. Yup! Not sure if its going to be latino or gringo, but I'll find out in a couple days, and I'm gonna be staying in the same area in Ilopango. A little twist though is that they are going to split my area in two and open up a new area here. So that's good and bad news. The good: I won't have to walk nearly as much. Bad: We´re losing some people we´re teaching, and I have no choice now but to go into some more dangerous areas... but no worries, I'll be good! I've been working out so everyone here is scared of my large muscles. jk not really, but It'll all be good.

So yeah Trump won. I almost think people care about the election more in this country than they do in the US. It was on the front page of every newspaper, and everyone was talking about it. People were always asking us stuff about what we thought, but we don't know anything and we cant say anything anyways. "Hey Donald Trump Junior!". "Sorry I can't talk now I have to go pick up my aunt from the airport, because Trump kicked them out. So yeah because of this election the president of the mission said that we should say we´re from England and not America... and we should cover up the american flags that we have on our bags... Eh I'm american and I'm proud of it. So no thanks. I'll be safe though. To give you more confindence in that we were walking and this gangsters said "Hey how are you?" (in english) and we responded and he had a big smile on his face the whole time. Also this morning we ate breakfast at this guys place, he lived in the states for 25 years, pretty cool dude. Then we asked if we could go to his house some day, but he said he rents it from the gangsters so it probably wouldn't be the smartest. But he said that if we have any problems with them, that we need to tell him because he knows the head guy in thast part of town and he´ll help us out. So we got the protection of the gangs I guess. Sweet huh? Also I had my first dream in Spanish! Sadly we were just teaching a lesson in my dream. but still all SPANISH. So theres that. next week I will have given birth to a beautiful 19-25 year old man child.

Nacho Libre's Cooking

Honestly nothing too crazy happened this week. Everything is pretty chill. Everything is good just kinda "Meh". Crazy people in the street keep touching me when I walk past... I never have had to practice my american football skills more in my life than I have in these past few weeks in Ilopango. Other than that everything is good. I'm on week 2 in T25. Time to get yoked children. Just kidding, everything is soaked in fat which means I will soon be soaked in fat (I think Ive gained 15 pounds . . .) I have never more related to the little kid from the movie Nacho Libre. Kid: "Why cant we ever have just like a salad?" Nacho: "...todays is especially delicious¨*shoots food out of nose*.

Never have I craved a good salad before. You can't really trust salads here because they´ll wash the leaves with bad water. And when we do eat them at members the bassically put a whole beat and tomato on top and say dig in. I actually almost threw it up once... but still going strong. I dont think I'll be able to send pictures this week. Computers are trash here. Kia Kaha

Sweet Football Skills and A Baptism

So this week was fairly bland not a whole lot happened really. Met some interesting people and taught some interesting lessons. Also, I baptized someone for the first time (in Spanish that is)! An 8-year old girl from the ward. They just asked one of us to do it, so I did it. Her name is Alejandra Carolina Umaña Esquivel, and I didn't get any pics because she showed up late so I didn't really have time to pull out my camera. I'll try and take a selfie at church or something. So that was cool! Also we were talking to some people in the street and this crazy homeless guy came up and started grabbing my arm and asking for money... eventually he left. Then two days later we were walking in the street and he comes walking up to us and my companion easily dodged him but, I had a little more trouble. He started touching me then I pulled out an American football move and spun around him then we ran away. Almost one of the scariest moments of my life. That`s life in Ilopango. Gangsters and crazy people.

A New Cool Area

Hey kids. So I had changes this week and now I'm in Ilopango! Neighbors with San Salvador. Yeah, they closed my area in San Miguel. So sadly I had to say bye to some people over there, like Alexander Campos and other cool people. So that's a bummer, but I got a signed jersey and pictures from him so no worries at all. Other missionaries are with him now so we´ll see what happens with that. Yeah, so Ilopango is super chill (temperature wise). I don't use my fan at all, and when I was in San Miguel I useed it every second I could. I wake up every morning shivering. Which gives me more motivation to work out... but its a pretty cool place. There´s a lot more drawings on the walls, and people in the streets... It's a little more dangerous but my companion is a big dude and I just try to puff out my chest and look tuff. Yeah, one night we were walking to an appointment that we had and I walked past 3 gangsters and one said in English, "Hey man what's up?" and I replied, "Sup man. Later" and kept going. I think he had a tear drop tattoo or something like that... I tried not to look for too long... but they´re chill so I'm good. So yeah, my companion is Elder Wikan from St. George Utah, down by Dixie. I would send pictures, but my computer sucks and doesn't have a USB thing that I can use. So our area is alright though, kind of dead right now, because before I came there was like 2 changes without any solid work going on. So we´ll see what happens. I don't really know a whole lot or have a whole lot to report, but yeah the walls here are a lot more pretty with all their drawings that they have so that makes life better. Adios!!

I am so close to asking for a name tag that has "Elder Van" because I'm getting sick of teaching people how to say my name.

Teaching a Pro Soccer Player

So I'll start at the beginning of the week and work my way through. Well actually last week. So we were knocking doors near our house and we found this lady in her mid thirties. She told us that her sister and husband and his side of the family are Mormons, and that she has gone to church a few times already. SWEET! Her son was also preparing for baptism and stuff. Way good find. So we passed by the following week (this week) so that we could also meet with her husband, and the husband answers the door. Hes a stacked dude, got a perfect haircut and everything (latinos love there hair) so we enter and we talk with the husband a bit. We see on the wall the logo of the local soccer team "Las Águilas" (the eagles) and we ask him "oh you a fan?" his answer "No I played for them" we look over and see his picture on the wall of him after a game, and we also see all of his trophies. He was player of the year and golden boot (scores most goals in the season) and he won the tournament here in El Salvador. I completed my dream. We taught a professional soccer player. He's playing for a different team now, but he is the real deal. Hes 36 though so hes probably gonna retire this season or next. But him and his family are way dope. They gave us pizza and everything. Then we passed by one day before conference to ask for a favor, to help us buy a soccer jersey for cheap (because as missionaries and as a white guy people think we have a lot of money). So after the saturday morning session of conference he picked us up in his car and took us to a good shop. Then he dropped us back off at the church for conference. We gave him a quick church tour then he had to leave because he already had a comittment. But still way dope. Also he signed my jersey. Alexander Campos number 9 nickname "El Murciélago" (the bat) look him up kids.

Also this week we taught a guy completely in English because we didn't want his wife to hear because she goes nuts. So my latino companion and me taught a full losson in English, way dope.
So conference was way good! I got to watch it all in English as well! I think this was the first conference that I watched completely withought falling asleep, but it really was good. My favorites were Bednar and Stevensen, and some others as well, but the way those two talk is something I like as well. And Stevensen is an Aggie Alumni as well so maybe there is a little bit of bias... I can't remember right now what they all talked about, but I did take notes and I found a lot of stuff to apply to my life. "What will I give for so much I have recieved" (dont remember exactly what it was) the Irish coat of arms was pretty dope and BE AMBITIOUS I think that applies a lot to missionaries because if were not ambitious you cant accomplish nada. Over all a really good conference.

Sadly my homie elder williams is getting transfered and we still dont know in our zone who is getting transferred. Sometime later today Ill know. I kindof want to go and kindof dont want to go. Partly because I wanna baptize Alexander "Murciélago Campos.

Here's some pics. The money I survived off of for a week... Party for "El día del Niño" a holiday all about kids. me and elder williams at conference. sac races from el día del niño. me and my new jersey. the signature of Murciélago.

Exchanges with the Zone Leaders

Well, this week wasn't all too crazy. Kinda normal and what not, we had exchanges with the zone leaders and I lead one of them around my area and normally we have 3 lessons a day (that is really low) but with him we had 11! Don't know what happened, but just maybe the area is turning around a bit, but it is still pretty hard. Saturday we only had 1... yeah its rough sometimes but still going. And the girl we baptized in my first week, she can't go to church anymore and is moving to a different city and there the church is like 45 minutes away and probably won't continue going to church. so that's a little bit of a bummer.. but other than that, things have just been bleh. I need to start working out more because my pants are feeling kind of tight... I refuse to buy new pants for my whole mission. Only if they get destroyed. Don't worry about me not getting food, because I really wish I could get less. The people here food us a ton of food. Here are some pics from the other week. Here´s a funny story this zone leader from above was looking at my pictures that I have then he saw the one of me Chris and Josh at Chris's graduation in front of old main. He said "oh this looks like a smart school." Oh yes, it is." (Utah State) so there's that.

Rats and Soccer

So this week wasn't anything extraordinary. Pretty bleh actually, but some good things too. Started out the week by killing some rats (latinos think anything that is mouse sized or larger is a rat). We were studying then I saw one run through the hall I shouted "Ratón!" Then my comp freaked out, sealed all the doors grabbed the brooms and set up a battle plan to kill it. Yeah we killed it... then we found his significant other in the bathroom and ended her too.

We also had interviews with president this week. Nothing too special with them, but president really is a great guy and hes got some great ideas and visions for this place.

So we`re teaching this kid of 8 years old and he`s kinda loco but he`s cool, and to help him focus we tell him that if he pays attention then we`ll give him candy and play with him. So we play soccer with him after every lesson, and now he`s telling all his friends/family that Im really good at soccer. Someone called out to me in the street and said "hey I heard you can play soccer!" "huhhhh I guess". Its not hard to play against an 8 year old.

Yeah our area kind of sucks. The ward doesnt help us at all and the people here dont want to listen to us. So we just walk around forever and no one lets us inside. But oh well, we've got some people that at least have a tiny desire do listen.

I would try to attach pics and videos of us with the rats, but my computer is slow...

Later kids!

Snakes, Snakes and More Snakes!

So this week wasn't too crazy, we had lessons and walked around and played with this kids trompo (top thing) after we visited him, and yeah, we were supposed to have interviews with president but stuff changed.

Also, funny/scary/unearving story. We stopped by this tienda to get a drink and its right across the street from a school. So we leave the tienda and make our way on this road, some girls (5 or 6) were pressed up against this barbed wire fence and saying "Hello my name is.....!" (in English). I just kept walking and said "Hello, have a nice day". Then we passed back by this school a while later and some different girls were yelling "Chelito! Hey Chelito!" (bassically 'little white boy') and making kissing noises (which means... well you know...). I ignored them and kept walking then one of them yelled out "Gayyyyyyy!" so yeah that was fairly interesting. Now my comp refers to me as "chelito".

This one day we left our house and it was pouring down rain like none other and I forgot my unbrella at someones house and my comp doesnt have one so we got soaked. Then we entered this house and we were teaching these ladies and our shirts were most definitely see through. you could see our nips, and they knew it too. So that was fun, but it all turned out well.

Also turns out the mom of our mission president died, so that kind of threw things off for a bit, but hes still here and working well.

Another story with the snakes. I was shaking hands with one as we were leaving and she WOULDNT LET GO. She stared me in the eyes and said "Your eyes are mine.", and tried pulling me towards her. I closed my eyes and was fighting back, then finally she released. I have never been so scared in my life. We will never go back to her house.

So last night I remembered it was 9/11 so I turned on some American music and looked through old pictures and stuff, because this is a day to remeber families and this tragic event. So then my comp said "oh yeah thats when Bin Laden crapped on those pinche gringos", I almost punched him square in the nose. Those people are not "pinche Gringos" they are inocent people whose lives ended too soon, because of the acts of evil people. (I'm not allowed to get too political here), so yeah I didnt talk with him the rest of the night. But I do hope people remember this day and remember their families because we won't have them forever. Sometimes shiz happens. Love you all.

Snakes and a Temple Trip

So I’ll start out with the worst of things and build my way up.

Remember what a snake is? A person that tries super hard to flirt with you. Yeah so we went to visit the family of this snake on Monday, and all was well. We greeted the brother at the door, se llama Beto, and he was happy and everything then left on his bike because he had to go to the store or something, not sure. Then we visited with the snake and her dad, then on Wednesday we returned and everyone was crying and there was a ton of people at the house. Turns out Beto got murdered right after we said bye to him Monday night. He rode off to another city, Usulutan, and was killed that night. so yeah . . .

To brighten things up I was walking in the street one of this days and I got cat-called. These Latinas are straight up freaky man. If for some reason I don’t make it out of this country alive, it’s because of the Latinas. Not because of gangsters. These snakes are scary man.

But hey on Tuesday we went to the temple! That was way cool! I mean besides the fact I had to wake up at 2:30 AM, but oh well, it was still way super good.

Things are going well with my new comp. We get along well and everything. Trying to think of anything special that happened, but not really. We had a lesson with the mom of an investigator, and my comp did the whole lesson by himself because it needed to be super clear for her. So I just played with the little kids. Yeah I said like two whole sentences within the span of an hour.

Also Ally Kelley is a legend here, sorry Josh. Everyone knows and loves her! So congrats Ally, you killed it in El Salv.

But yeah health, safety, and all that jazz is good.

Elder Vaughan

Here are some pictures. Me with the zone, my awkward smile with the dope care package, me and Elder Sligting and the temple. Temple selfie. Me and my new comp. Temple bichos (don’t worry that’s not a bad word).

Drinking from a Coconut and Scrambled Pancakes

So we had changes this week and I am now with Elder Mejia. He´s 22 and from Honduras. He has about 19 months in the mission. Yeah so that´s him. So things were kind of bland this week. Nothing too crazy. So theres this one lady we found that was baptized as a kid and has since left the church and she's smoking like 20 ciggaretts a day. When we first met her she said she didn't want to hear anything from us, but we could talk to her son. Then after a couple days we started talking to her and now we´re helping to quit smoking and her son has a baptismal date.

I guess latinas love white skin... its really creeping me out. We were starting out this one lesson with a girl staring at me saying "oh my your eyes are so beautiful...." (insert other creepy crap) then her sister was asking if I can marry people here in El Salvador... Then in this other lesson this 50 year old women was saying "oh wow your white skin its so beautiful....." (more crap). Then during the lesson my comp was talking and I looked over and she was staring at me... No. Please, no. Yeah that's what we call "snakes"

So my comp was saying I´m weird cause I'm quiet and don't say anything (Why talk unless someone asks me a question?) and he always asks what I like to do for fun in the mission (like at night and stuff). and I dont do anything. I just like to read pretty much, But I realized my real joy comes from the people in this country I have such a fun time talking with everyone that I don't need anymore in the night. Yes this is hard work but the people really make it easier and make this country fun.

Here are some pancake scrambled eggs because my pan is denfinitely not a non-stick. But very delicious. Me drinking cocunut in the "garden of eden" (yard of the zone leaders/assistants house), a super dope bridge. Also, I look very bald, I'm sorry. And the river next to the bridge. More coconut.

Teaching Castro's Personal Fanboy

So I'm just gonna kinda go all over the place, this week was pretty interesting.

So an investigator gave us a reference to his English teacher, so we decided to go hit it up the other day. When we walked in the investigator was there with the guy. This guy is fairly large and uses a wheel chair, he has a special button to open up the door for people too (way dope). He wears an apron and shorts shorts. Both of which are not very flatering. He has a very large beard (like Bin Laden) and wears a beret (weird hat thing) that has a picture of fidel castro on it. alsw he has giant posters of fidel castro EVERYWHERE. We taught a communist. He had a weird thing for mentioning baghdad a lot . . . We taught a communist terrorist, and then he gave us a bag of coffee. café de maíz. communist coffee. ya.

So last week for P-day we went to youkwaquin (you-kwa-king) and did this way amazing hike (pictures attached) and basically chilled at the top of this place overlooking El Salv and Honduras. So our recent converts little sister was super super sick earlier this week so we gave her a blessing, then the next day we were passing by and the little girl was perfectly okay! Running around and eating this monster of a sandwhich. So yeah I think she`s okay . . . I'll let you people think on that more. So one of the most frustrating things is when we talk with people and they say "Yeah of course im gonna do this" and we plan out everything for them (like going to church). Then we pass by in the morning and they`re like "ohhhh no we`re not going . . ." then we say "hey you got a half hour no worries you can still go" they say "oh yeah we`ll get ready right now!" and guess who doesn`t go . . . everyone. Yeah that`s really annoying. But whatever. So there is this pack of dogs that always waits to come and take us out, but we`re ready now. so there is like 4 or 5 of them that hang out on this one corner every day/night (night time is when they attack) but we have a couple stash piles of rocks on either side of them, so no matter what direction we come through we`re armed. I have yet to hit one yet, because I cant force my self to hit dogs. But I just throw them close and they get scared. Also turns out if you run towards them they freak out like none other. Yeah that`s always fun.

My area is by that volcano and it includes where we are standing . . . (way huge), the district (minus the assistents to the pres.), posing infront of honduras and the ocean, some street, baleadas are like the pupusas of Honduras (a member makes them for us all the time), some off brand tortillas smashed between two tortillas. is this salvadoranian food? No this is Jesse food.

Goodbye children

First Homemade Pupusas

So as you´ll see below I made my very first pupusas! The salvadorans were pretty suprised at how good they looked. So yeah, I was pretty successful at it if you ask me. I ate 4 of them and right after felt so full like I was going to explode. We made it home, planned, and immediatly after, threw up everything that was in my body. (so I´m not sure if I can say I´ve eaten 18 pupusas or 14). Yeah it was gnarly, then I got hit from the other end too . . . This happend for a couple days and I can successful say that I went about 3-4 without eating . . . all I could down was some yogurt an cereal. I Had my first full meals yesterday, and that was pretty hard to get it all down. and now I have zero appetite to eat pupusas again. But I'm feeling better now. Oh, one thing that was fun, was I downed some pepto and then we got on the bus to head out for the day and this bus was packed. My comp was hanging onto the rails outside of the bus and it got to the point where I pushed some ladies out of the way so that I could make it to the window just in time to throw up. Every latino on that busw was starring in horror. it was awesome. It made me feel better though. Heres a downing ewxperience as well.

So we have these two super progressing investigators that read the Book of Mormon every day and do everything they're supposed to do, but the dad is catholic and wont let them go to church or anything unless he goes with them (so he'll never go) and they cant be baptised till their old enough to decide on their own (18 years old). So maybe in 4 or so years they'll get baptized . . . But right after that we had a good experience with someone else. We went to this house were a brother and sister and her boyfriend live. And they didnt have time to visit cause they were leaving for a soccer game (that's everyone excuse) but they said they prayed and the boyfriend said he felt really really happy when he prayed. And the other said he began to cry when he prayed. We asked them "Oh, so does this make you know Joseph Smith is a prophet?" and they said "yeah" and then we invited them to church and stuff but the one that cried, said he cant go because he's preparing for baptism in another church . . . Hombre. But still cool.

These are pics from our trip to Youquaquin (you-kwa-king) and at the house where we made pupusas.
